Gene Avakyan, a Florida-based engineer was just nine years old when he left his native Kyiv, fleeing the country with tensions high in his homeland.
But Mr Avakyan turned that fear into a passion and has since enjoyed a fruitful career, which has culminated in his current post working alongside the US Federal Government within the Federal Aviation Administration.
